Day excursions around the Silver Coast reveal picturesque villages, enchanting historic towns and beautiful countryside dotted with windmills, vineyards, pine forests and fragrant orchards. Architecture in the region is full of character – traditional white houses with vibrant blue boarders and tiled details are brought to life under the intense Portuguese sun.

• Mafra
  The town of Mafra is dominated by the magnificent Baroque style National Palace, which was commissioned in 1717 by King Joao V. The imposing façade, built of local limestone, is 220 m long. Inside, the palace features an impressive basilica with six pipe organs and a stunning Rococo library containing some 40,000 rare books.
   
• Óbidos
  The medieval settlement of Óbidos is a must for all visitors to the Silver Coast. Surrounded by a tall wall of ramparts, this charming town is full of narrow streets and higgledy-piggledy houses. Shops lining the main street sell local crafts and Ginginha, a brandy liqueur made with local cherries. Enjoy views over the breathtaking local countryside from the top of the wall.
   
• Turcifal
  The nearest town to CampoReal has a charming 17th century church, which is said to have been built from the materials left over from the construction of Mafra’s Palace. The small town also has two of the finest restaurants in the region, Lampião and Lanterna, fine Portuguese meals in a relaxed, family atmosphere.
   
• Torres Vedras
  Just five minutes drive from CampoReal, Torres Vedras is a medium sized town with a castle, a well kept park and a range of amenities. The main square has a famous purveyor of Pasteis de Feijao, a typical Portuguese sweet pie with almonds and white beans.
   
• Sintra
  This stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must see if you are in the Lisbon area. Its 19th century Romantic architecture is like a page torn from a fairy tale!
