Situated at the mouth of the river estuary, this is the place from which the caravels sailed on their voyage of discovery. Climb the Torre de Belém, which was designed in 1514 as a key sea defence for the region.
In the centre of Belém is the magnificent 16th century Hieronymite Monastery. It was designed to reflect the prosperity of the Portuguese empire and its construction took almost 100 years.
